The 2016 – 2017 soccer season was a very good year for our organization! We began by honoring the Christos FC team for their two national championships at our fall general membership meeting, the executive board had a great time attending the MACS All State dinner in February, we had a successful Bull and Oyster roast in March where we made over $1000 for our scholarship fund and we conducted our spring membership meeting at Claddaugh Pub where everyone had a great time. Our crowning achievement for the season, however; was the 2017 Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame which turned out to be one of our most successful ever. We elected seven new members to the Hall of Fame and had an attendance of 350 which was one of our largest crowds ever. Also honored was the 1966 Patterson High School undefeated MSA champions who were celebrating their fiftieth anniversary and the Sparrows Point High School women’s program who has won four straight state championships. Two referee awards, the John Schmid Service Award and two outstanding high school player awards were also given.
Now, unfortunately, I must make the following announcement. Due to recent health problems, I can no longer continue as your president and must resign effective immediately. I have been honored to be your president for the last fourteen years and I think the organization has worked hard to preserve soccer history in the State of Maryland and to maintain the Hall of Fame. It is too bad that time takes its toll on all of us and it has on me. However, our organization moves on but we really need a shot of rejuvenation! Some of our present board members are likewise getting old and have been doing the work of the organization for many years and are getting worn out. We need people to step forward and get involved that have energy, fresh ideas and skills that will help our organization move forward in the 21st century.
We have vacancies on the board in the offices of president, vice-president and Len Lewandowski is presently serving as both our secretary and treasurer. Later in the year, the organization will conduct elections to fill these and other positions. Think hard about getting involved so that the Old Timers can continue their great service for the soccer community of Maryland. We are holding steady at the moment with 150 members but we need more and we need people to step up.
In the meanwhile, remember me in your prayers as I move forward in life and I will also be praying for all of you and for our organization.
